Paraná, November 11, 2019 – On November 7, Klabin, Brazil’s leading producer and exporter of packaging paper, obtained the Paraná Climate Seal from the Paraná Industries Federation, Curitiba, which recognizes companies that prepare and publish inventories of their greenhouse gas emissions audited by Inmetro, for its four units in Paraná. The Rio Negro, Paranaguá, Monte Alegre and Puma units received the certification. The first two received the Gold Paraná Climate Seal and the other two the Gold Plus Paraná Climate Seal since these reduced GHG emissions by over 0.5% per year.

“The Gold Seal reinforces our commitment to sustainable development, guided by our environmental commitment. This year, we were also certified in the Gold Plus category for the Monte Alegre and Puma units, reflecting the company’s intensive efforts to reduce the consumption of fuel oil, while prioritizing biomass (renewable fuel) to generate energy. We will continue our efforts to increasingly reduce gas emissions and help reduce global warming,” highlighted Júlio Cesar Batista Nogueira, Klabin’s Sustainability and Environment Manager.

The environmental management model, which helps drive operational and process improvements, and increase the share of renewable sources in Klabin’s energy matrix, is reflected in important results such as the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.  Currently, the company’s energy matrix is composed 89.1% of renewable sources generated from forest-based products. According to 2018 data, CO2 equivalent emissions totaled 6.1 million tons, but the forestry operation sequestered 11.2 million tons of CO2 equivalent, resulting in a positive balance of 5.1 million tons of CO2 equivalent. This means that its forestry base removes more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than is emitted by all of its industrial units.

In Paraná, Klabin last year reduced Scope 1 greenhouse gas emissions by 6% compared to 2017.
