Klabin celebrates the results of its “Good Idea Reservoir” Campaign

São Paulo, June 3, 2015 – Klabin, Brazil’s largest packaging paper producer and exporter, created the Good Idea Reservoir, a campaign for employees to share their experiences caring and preserving the environment and their surroundings.Beginning in March – the month of National Climate Change Awareness Day (16), Forest Day (21) and Water Day (22) – the campaign ends on another important date: June 5, World Environment Day.

The campaign included 75 days of actions and 39 ideas were sent by employees from the Company’s 14 units, distributed among seven Brazilian states.During this period, 15 stories were selected and published on a weekly basis on Klabin’s website. These stories are now printed in an almanac that will be distributed to Klabin’s employees.

“Our objective is to multiply these great ideas among our employees, their families and friends and in the communities where we operate, inspiring new protagonists.Klabin is a benchmark in sustainability in its operations and we hope to further promote this value in people’s daily lives,” said Carime Kanbour, Sustainability and Communication Manager at Klabin.

Klabin Good Idea Reservoir – Among the many stories, the experience of laboratory technician Marinez Romanhuck, who works in the quality and environment area at the Correia Pinto (Santa Catarina) unit, stands out.Marinez found a way to reuse packaging from milk boxes consumed at her home. She had the idea to use boxes by transforming them into handicraft purses and wallets. After research, the employee presented her work during a recycling workshop held at a school in Correia Pinto in partnership with Klabin.Their success among children, professors and colleagues at the Company in reusing boxes was so great that people began to donate packaging and show interest in learning more about the topic.“In addition to helping preserve nature, the activity became quite therapeutic for me, together with the happy moments I spend with my children, who participate by giving me their opinions on the types of purses and wallets I should make and learning the importance of recycling,” said Marinez.

Hugo Leonardo de Freitas, administrative assistant at the Betim Unit (Minas Gerais), came up with a very relevant idea for our current times.Concerned with the lack of water affecting neighborhoods in the city where he lives, Hugo created and assembled a cistern, a system for reusing rainwater. With a simple, cheap and functional design, he installed a structure to guide water from gutters on his home to a 500 liter container on the ground floor, which he connected to the faucets in his home using a PVC pipe.Hugo was also careful to ensure the container remained covered, with a system that removes excess water once it reaches a set limit. The project had several benefits.“I can wash my car, clothing, clean the house and the yard,” Hugo said.Furthermore, the project also has advantages for the environment, saving 1,600 liters of water and reducing his water bill by 20%.This serves as an incentive for his colleagues and the community.
