Klabin publishes 2012 Sustainability Report

Klabin, Brazil’s biggest packaging paper manufacturer and exporter, is publishing its sustainability report for 2012. For the first time, the company is presenting the complete version of the report in only a digital format. With interactive navigation, the new version makes the search for information easy and access to the available contents quick and straightforward.

One of the highlights of the report is the reduction of over 60% in the emission of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) by the company in comparison with eight years ago. In 2012, emissions avoided by the company totaled more than 3.1 thousand tons of CO² eq (international measure to express the quantity of greenhouse gases), which are equivalent to 22 thousand planted trees in a reforestation project of 30 years’ duration.
Among the principal actions taken in the quest to lower emissions, Klabin raised consumption of electrical power obtained from clean, renewable sources, such as solar and eolic and, for steam generation it also started to use natural gas instead of fuel oil, a change which reduced CO² emissions by 26% per unit of the company’s energy.

The report also underscores the increase in Klabin’s rates of reuse of hydric resources. In 2012, the company re-utilized 33% of all the water consumed in its production activities, equivalent to over 4 million water tanks of 5 thousand liter capacity. This amount is the result of programs which were developed to recycle and reuse water in irrigation and put into practice by Klabin, proof of the company’s concern with preservation and rational use of the hydrographic basins.

During the period, the company also worked to ensure the preservation of its native woodlands. Today, 90 hectares of native woodlands are preserved for every 100 hectares of Klabin’s planted forests. Last year the company identified, in its forests, over 1.4 thousand species of animals and 2 thousand of plants, of which 890 and 122 respectively are endangered, according to IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature). The company is also responsible for drawing up a Stewardship Plan every year for its forestry units, which makes it possible to integrate pine and eucalyptus plantations with native areas, in such a way that impacts are reduced and sustainable use of the forest is enhanced.

The report also contains information on Klabin’s economic-financial performance which, last year, enjoyed the best year in its history, achieving a record EBITDA of R$ 1.4 billion.

The company’s commitment to and practices of sustainability have matured as well during this period: besides the Sustainability Committee, consisting of the directors and one external member, Klabin has introduced a specific area of Sustainability Management. And lastly, among the many voluntary commitments taken up and maintained by the company, the report draws attention to a blend of engagement and adherence in its corporate actions and the guidelines of the UN Global Compact, of which the company has been a signatory since 2000.

These and other initiatives involving Klabin’s sustainable actions are available in the company’s 2012 Sustainability Report, which is accessible on the website www.klabin.com.br.
