Klabin Ecological Park takes part in the Secret Santa initiative organized by AZAB

  • Zoos and aquariums in Brazil unite in support of species conservation
  • In the traditional year-end game, the Puma will represent the Klabin Ecological Park, a center dedicated to biodiversity conservation, wildlife rehabilitation, and care of wild animals located in Telêmaco Borba, Paraná.

São Paulo, December 22, 2025 - 27 zoos and aquariums have joined together in a Secret Santa, using the holiday spirit to highlight the important role these institutions play in protecting regional wildlife, as well as to strengthen their collaboration. The Klabin Ecological Park (PEK) is participating in this initiative represented by the Puma (Puma concolor), also known as the mountain lion or cougar, among other names. It occurs in Paraná and is currently classified as vulnerable.

This initiative is spearheaded by AZAB (the Brazilian Association of Zoos and Aquariums), which advocates for the country’s zoological and aquarium sector before governmental and non-governmental organizations on matters of biodiversity conservation and the management of wildlife under human care. The participants, recognized for their work focused on the conservation of species, are distributed throughout the Midwest, Northeast, Southeast, and South regions of the country.

The activity can be followed through the profiles of @azab.oficial and the participating institutions on Instagram, including Klabin. The Company will take part in this initiative through its profile @bioklabin, a channel established to share its activities in nature and biodiversity conservation. The drawing was held at the beginning of the month, and the reveal is scheduled for the week of December 22 to 27.Klabin's participation is set for December 24.Followers can join in the game by guessing the species and learning a bit more about the participating animals.

"Educational activities like these are crucial for fostering public understanding of biodiversity preservation, a cause championed by zoological and aquarium organizations. These institutions operate guided by pillars such as environmental education, conservation, scientific research, and animal welfare, moving beyond the outdated concept of spaces meant solely for the display of species,” says Paulo Henrique Schmidlin, Biodiversity and Ecological Park Coordinator at Klabin.

The Klabin Ecological Park is dedicated to advancing scientific research on flora and fauna, conserving biodiversity, promoting environmental education, supporting the breeding of endangered species, and rescuing and rehabilitating wildlife. Located at Monte Alegre Farm in Telêmaco Borba, Paraná, the PEK spans nearly 10,000 hectares and is home to approximately 120 animals representing 30 species, including Puma, Guan, Maned Wolf, and Ocelot.

About Puma

Puma (Puma concolor), also known as cougar or mountain lion, is one of the most agile large cats in the Americas and also one of the quietest. It is a solitary hunter that pursues prey larger than itself and is capable of jumping great heights, clearing over five meters.

This species is classified as Vulnerable (VU) on the national list maintained by ICMBio – the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation – since 2014, with its conservation status varying by state and being more critical in certain regions.
