Klabin strengthens its environmental legacy with new nature reserves in Paraná

Managing five Private Natural Heritage Reserves in southern Brazil, the Company protects over 9,000 hectares of Atlantic Forest conservation areas

Community engagement and environmental education are key initiatives implemented by Klabin within its conservation areas

São Paulo, October 14, 2025 – Klabin, Brazil’s largest producer and exporter of packaging paper and sustainable solutions in paper packaging, has incorporated three new Private Natural Heritage Reserves (RPPNs) in Paraná: Barra Mansa (Arapoti) and Vale do Corisco (Sengés), incorporated as part of the Caetê Project; and Samuel Klabin (Imbaú). The areas are now added to the Monte Alegre RPPNs, also located in Paraná, and the Serra da Farofa Complex, in Santa Catarina, strengthening the Company’s longstanding commitment to biodiversity conservation.

With the addition of the new units, Klabin now conserves more than 9,000 hectares of Atlantic Forest in reserves dedicated to the protection of native vegetation. In total, the Company manages over 900,000 hectares of forestland across the states of Paraná, Santa Catarina, and São Paulo, with 41% of this area consisting of conserved native forests—a proportion that exceeds the requirements set by Brazilian law.

The RPPN Barra Mansa, established in 1991, safeguards remnants of Araucaria forests and is home to approximately 40% of the plant species recorded in Paraná. In 2014, it was designated as a High Conservation Value Area by The Nature Conservancy. The RPPN Vale do Corisco, established in 1999, is notable for its unique rock formations and Devonian-period fossils, dating back approximately 400 million years. The area is also home to the Corisco waterfall, one of the state's tourist attractions, with a fall of over 100 meters. In 2023, the region received international certification for its outstanding biodiversity, further underscoring its ecological significance.

Established in 2025, the RPPN Samuel Klabin encompasses areas of Mixed Ombrophilous Forest and Seasonal Semideciduous Forest. This region is home to 267 plant species, including 100 tree species, with a notable emphasis on fruit-bearing varieties. Seven of these species are endangered. The fauna consists of 104 birds, 26 mammals, 10 amphibians and one reptile, a significant number that reinforces the importance of this conservation unit, which harbors a remarkable diversity of animal and plant species.

Natural reserves are part of Klabin's environmental legacy and sustainable goals

Klabin’s commitment to environmental conservation dates back to the 1980s, with the establishment of the Klabin Ecological Park (PEK), situated within the RPPN Monte Alegre, in Paraná. Since then, the Company has been shaping its forestry strategy based on the integration of sustainable production and ongoing preservation. PEK is one of the Company’s leading natural laboratories, serving as a foundation for scientific research, educational initiatives, and community engagement.

An outstanding example of this work is the reintroduction of the Black-fronted piping guan, a bird once considered extinct in the central forests of Paraná. In 2023, after years of careful planning and reintroduction protocols, 30 individuals were released into the wild, representing a significant milestone in the conservation of endangered species.

In addition to Monte Alegre, Klabin manages the RPPN Serra da Farofa, in Santa Catarina, which is the Company’s largest private conservation unit and the third largest in southern Brazil. Spanning almost 5,000 hectares, the reserve houses the Nature Interpretation Center (CINAT), which promotes educational experiences and supports academic research.

All these initiatives are aligned with the Klabin Sustainable Development Goals (KODS), a public commitment undertaken by the Company in 2020. Among the targets set for 2030 are the restoration of degraded areas, the protection of endangered species, and the expansion of environmental education initiatives in the regions where Klabin operates.
