The award was earned through a research initiative with UDESC, exploring the use of forest residues as a nucleation technique for ecosystem restoration

São Paulo, September 29, 2025 – Klabin, Brazil’s largest producer and exporter of packaging paper and sustainable solutions in paper packaging, has been honored with the Green Wave Trophy at the Expressão de Ecologia Awards, in the category of Degraded area restoration. The award ceremony took place on September 27, at Jurerê Beach Village, in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina.

The achievement was made possible through the Forest Residue project, which used a nucleation technique to restore areas degraded by gravel mining in Otacílio Costa, Santa Catarina. The initiative, conducted in partnership with the State University of Santa Catarina (UDESC), involved forest restoration in two settings, reestablishing native vegetation in two areas of the Santa Catarina plateau.

“It is an honor to once again be among the recipients of this prestigious award and to have our efforts in rehabilitating degraded areas recognized. This achievement underscores our ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and highlights the value of our collaborations with academic institutions to advance scientific research, promote responsible forest management and foster sustainable development in the region,” said Mireli Pitz, Environmental and Social Responsibility coordinator at Klabin. In total, more than 10,000 individuals belonging to 84 species were recorded, demonstrating the recovery potential of the Atlantic Forest biome.

This marks Klabin’s 21st achievement in the 31 editions of the award, which in 2025 recognized 33 projects from 27 organizations. The Expressão de Ecologia Award is certified by the Brazilian Ministry of the Environment and honors companies making a difference in environmental preservation, with a focus on innovation and impactful sustainability practices.
