Klabin strengthens actions to combat forest fires in Paraná as part of a statewide campaign

Despite the reduction in fires at the beginning of the year, drought between June and October requires attention

Klabin's teams conduct firefighting training

Paraná, September 8, 2025 – Klabin, Brazil’s largest producer and exporter of packaging paper and sustainable solutions in paper packaging, is participating in the 2025 forest fire prevention campaign of the Paraná Association of Forest-Based Companies (APRE Florestas).

The reinforcement of prevention takes place at a time of increased attention. Despite the 40% drop in forest fires in the state of Paraná, recorded between January and April, according to the Fire Department, the most critical period is yet to come. Between June and October, the combination of drought, dry vegetation and human carelessness increases the risks of fire in native areas and planted forests.

According to the Fire Department, 90% of forest fires are caused by human activities. Irregular burning of garbage, use of fire to clear land and non-compliance with safety standards are still among the main causes.

Technology and specialized teams in controlling the occurrence of fires

Committed to sustainability and safety, Klabin maintains a permanent structure for monitoring and controlling fires in its forests. The company operates a 24/7 surveillance system, utilizing 30 cameras positioned on observation towers with a range of up to 40 kilometers. The images are monitored in real time by a trained team that quickly identifies and notifies the field team, who are then dispatched to control hotspots.

In addition to technology, the company has 1,500 employees prepared to respond to emergencies, an aircraft with a capacity for 480 liters of water, 9 trucks adapted in the style of the Fire Department, and 16 water tank trucks.

"Forest fire control is a shared responsibility. That’s why our actions go beyond Klabin. We have teams and equipment ready to support nearby rural and urban communities, working side by side with the fire safety authorities,” highlights Carlos Cesar Santos, coordinator of Forest Asset Protection at Klabin.

APRE’s campaign is part of a joint effort among companies, public bodies, and research institutions, such as Fire Department, Civil Defense, Embrapa Forestas, and Ibama/Prevfogo. The goal is to reinforce the culture of prevention and expand environmental education in one of the most critical periods for native vegetation and planted forests in Paraná.
