Santa Catarina, June 4, 2025 – Klabin, through its management of planted and native forests, implements practices to protect biodiversity and conserve water sources, making significant contributions to environmental preservation. As a result, 897 species of native plants and 563 animal species have been identified in the Company's areas in Santa Catarina since 2008, when the surveys began. Furthermore, the Company protects over 6,000 kilometers of rivers and more than 10,000 watersheds in the state, contributing to the region's water supply. The data are part of the 2025 Santa Catarina Public Summary.
“We are recognized for our sustainable practices; our forests rank among the most productive in the world. Through mosaic management, we effectively contribute to the protection of natural resources," remarks Júlio Nogueira, Klabin's Sustainability and Environment Manager.
The Public Summary outlines the Company's efforts in effectively managing its native and planted forests, while also offering insights into its social and environmental initiatives aimed at promoting sustainability. The forest area owned by Klabin in Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul covers approximately 153,000 hectares, spread across 42 municipalities in Santa Catarina and 11 cities in Rio Grande do Sul. Of this area, more than 72,000 hectares consist of preserved native forests. The remaining area consists of planted forests of pine and eucalyptus, which supply the Company's production of pulp, paper and packaging.
In this context, various aspects of forest management are examined to ensure the sustainable and orderly maintenance of forests. In forestry, activities include land preparation with operations aimed at conserving soil and water resources, planting seedlings, pest control, and fertilization, all in accordance with current technical standards. During the harvest, the biomass—plant material that cannot be used—is processed and sent to the mill, where it becomes renewable fuel for the mills through steam generation. In other words, beyond enhancing the sustainable energy matrix, the use of biomass reinforces circularity within the Company's internal processes.
In the Public Summary, you can also learn more about the social and environmental projects that Klabin conducts and supports in the communities where it operates. Programs such as Forest Development and Certification for Rural Producers and Beekeepers are among the initiatives directed at the local population. Through Klabin Transforms, the Company also supports projects such as Caiubi, Legal Forests and Social Forests.
“We consistently invest in the development of communities neighboring our forestry and industrial operations, ensuring that the entire population can benefit from these initiatives aimed at boosting the local economy. These initiatives are carried out through activities related to environmental education, culture and citizenship," concludes Nogueira.
