Klabin innovates in forest harvesting by deploying pioneering machine that integrates all processes

Harbunk, the machine that is new to Brazil, reduces costs, increases productivity and offers greater operational safety

Paraná, June 10, 2022 – A forest machine capable of bringing technological development to the field, increasing operational safety and reducing CO2 emissions. These are the objectives of Harbunk, a machine designed based on studies by Klabin, Brazil’s largest producer and exporter of packaging paper and paper packaging, in partnership with Ponsse, the Finnish manufacturer of forest harvesting equipment, including the Harvester Bear machine, based on which Harbunk was designed.  Equipped with the technology to execute all the stages of wood harvest of full trees, the pioneering machine also increases productivity and reduces operating costs, especially in small areas.

So far, Klabin carried out forest harvest in small areas using only the cut-to-length (CTL) system, which ensures operational efficiency in large areas and requires the use of two machines (Harvester and Forwarder), each responsible for one phase of the operation. However, this process increases the investments of companies and small rural producers, consequently increasing CO2 emissions.

Thanks to its unique design, Harbunk optimizes the process as this single machine manages to extract and process wood, considerably reducing operating costs while enabling a more efficient and sustainable harvest. One of the key gains is the reduction of time lost with the transportation of machines. Since it is a single machine, it spends more time in each forest than the set of cut-to-length or full tree machines, thus reducing commute time between harvest locations and increasing the availability time of the machine for the operation.

The benefits of Harbunk, however, go beyond the harvest process. The machine, which took two years between its conception and the finished product, reduces the risk of forest accidents as it can harvest in practically all types of areas, including those with wavy topography, thus increasing operational safety. In addition, the technology employed in Harbunk is state of the art in the forest sector, which has technologic, safe and comfortable machines.

“Harbunk demonstrates once again Klabin’s pioneering efforts to promote innovation in all its areas as an important driver of its business growth. The development of this machine is an initiative aimed at the operational excellence of forest harvesting, which enables environmental and social improvements to its employees and the community, and reinforces the recognition of Klabin as a corporate citizen and innovative company,” said José Totti, Forestry Director at Klabin.

Thanks to the constant pursuit of innovation, Harbunk is the product of dedication and synergy between the forest business areas and international partners, and is part of the portfolio of the Projects and Forest Development area. “In the Projects and Forest Development area, we implement methodologies to manage a strategic and agile portfolio to roll out our innovations. We strive to support Klabin’s strategic growth by ensuring the implementation of innovative projects in harvesting, forest plantation and forest logistics. Our commitment is to implement projects that are aligned with the company’s 2030 Agenda and promote sustainable development, while increasing operational efficiency,” Totti added.

“We are always side by side with our clients to develop solutions for the real problems of forest harvesting. We brought a team from Klabin to learn about the innovative actions in Europe and jointly developed a machine that would meet their needs, further optimizing the operation, especially in small forest areas,” said Rodrigo Marangoni, sales and marketing manager at Ponsse.
