São Paulo, 27 of October 2014 – Klabin, concerned with its use of direct and indirect energy, reached a usage rate of 86.7% of renewable sources in 2013 in the generation of electricity in its energy matrix. The target of the company is to achieve a rate of 88% by 2017 and it has made the improvement of energy efficiency in its plants a priority.

In order to achieve this result, the company, which has made continuing investments in equipment – installed boilers driven by biofuel – leaves and branches not used in pulp production – in all of its plants in substitution of fuel oil and has put a series of improvements into practice in its production processes. Consequently, Klabin has reaffirmed its concern with the issue and has shown progressive advances in the usage of renewable and clean energy sources.

The renewable sources used by Klabin are built upon three pillars: burning black liquor (a sub-product generated during the process), biofuel-driven boilers to substitute fuel oil and own electrical hydro-power generation. The company also sources electrical energy from clean, such as eolic and solar, sources.

It is important to mention that Klabin’s new pulp mill, forecast for inauguration in 2016 in the municipality of Ortigueira (PR), will be energy self-sufficient. The new plant will have the capacity to generate 270 MW of power using biofuel, 150 MW of which will be made available on the Brazilian grid system, enough power to supply a city of 5 thousand inhabitants.

Initiatives such as these are an assertion of Klabin’s sustainability principles in all its activities and help to make all its actions economically viable, socially just and environmentally correct.
