Klabin wins Best and Biggest Works Award with the Puma II Project

The Ortigueira Unit (PR), one of the world's most modern and sustainable pulp and paper mills, was recognized by the Institute of Engineering and by the Construction News Center

São Paulo, September 2, 2024 – Klabin, Brazil’s largest producer and exporter of packaging paper and sustainable solutions in paper packaging, was recognized by the Institute of Engineering and by the Construction News Center (ConVisão CNC) with the Best and Biggest Works Award 2024, in the Heavy Industry category, for the Puma II Project, in Paraná, currently the Ortigueira Unit. The announcement was made during the National Engineering Week, at a ceremony held last Tuesday (27), in São Paulo.

The Puma II Project is considered the largest investment cycle in Klabin's century-long history, demonstrating its ability for sustainable growth combined with technology. The R$12.9 billion investment, the largest private contribution in Paraná's history, encompassed the construction of paper machines 27 and 28, both of which are already operational. Additionally, it included a series of efficiency projects that support the Unit's operations, ensuring the use of renewable energy, intelligent waste management, wastewater treatment, and initiatives to reduce air emissions.

The work was divided into two stages, creating over 33,000 jobs, both direct and indirect. Besides encouraging partner companies to hire workers from the Campos Gerais region of Paraná state, Klabin also added value to the local labor pool by investing in technical training in the communities of Ortigueira and Telêmaco Borba. Currently, the Ortigueira Unit employs about 2,000 people.

Aligned with the Industry 4.0 principles, the Puma II Project increased Klabin's production capacity by an additional 900,000 tons of paper per year, further enhancing the integration of the production chain. Moreover, diverse initiatives foster circularity in production processes, in line with the UN 2030 Agenda and Klabin’s Sustainable Development Goals (KODS), whose commitments include maximum optimization of resources and the reintroduction of waste in production systems.
