Klabin inaugurates port terminal in Paranaguá

The terminal consolidates Klabin’s logistics strategy in the state and enables it to receive pulp and paper shipments at the port

Paraná, March 22, 2023 – Klabin, Brazil’s largest producer and exporter of packaging paper and sustainable solutions in paper packaging, officially launched, on Wednesday (22), its operations at the Klabin Port Terminal (PAR-01), located on the commercial quay of the Port of Paranaguá, in the state of Paraná. With the capacity to receive one million tons of pulp and paper per year, the terminal is part of an investment package in logistics made by the Company in the state over recent years. The operations will enable the unloading at the Port of Paranaguá of hardwood, softwood and fluff pulp as well as paper from the Puma Units located in Ortigueira, Paraná and from the Monte Alegre Unit located in Telêmaco Borba in the same state.

With facilities covering 27,530 m² that were leased by Klabin for 25 years in an auction held in August 2019, the new operation will also increase its productivity and competitiveness in Break Bulk operations, a maritime cargo transportation mode that dispenses with containers by loading large volumes directly inside ships, enabling us to serve our clients on a large scale with operational excellence.

In terms of sustainability, the new terminal is directly connected by rail to Klabin’s mill in Ortigueira, which reduces truck traffic and consequently greenhouse gas emissions, while improving traffic on the access routes to Paranaguá. The terminal also has solar panels that generate some 270 MWh/year, making the site’s energy generation more sustainable and strengthening Klabin’s commitment to its ESG agenda.

The inauguration event was attended by state authorities, who included the governor of Paraná, Ratinho Junior, the state secretary of Infrastructure and Logistics, Fernando Furiatti, the president of the Administration of the Ports of Paranaguá and Antonina (APPA), Luiz Fernando Garcia da Silva, and the National Secretary of Ports and Water Transportation, Fabrizio Pierdomenico.  At the occasion, Klabin’s executives reinforced the terminal’s importance as part of its business strategy. “The Port of Paranaguá is one of Brazil’s key ports and Klabin’s main production shipment route. The new terminal will bring for Klabin operating efficiency gains and higher logistics productivity, as well as support the development of logistics infrastructure across Brazil, enabling the use of modes other than road transport for shipping cargo”, said Roberto Bisogni, director of Operational Planning, Logistics, Procurement and IT at Klabin.

With the operation, Klabin consolidates its logistics strategy in the state of Paraná, while further increasing the competitiveness, flexibility and sustainability of its operations, not to mention improving its preparedness for future expansions. In 2021, the Company invested R$300 million in the Ortigueira Container Terminal, which is operated in partnership with Brado Logística and the Paranaguá Container Terminal (TCP). The project has the capacity to store 2,000 containers and doubled the Company’s container transportation capacity in Paraná.
