Projeto Puma II

First paper machine of Klabin’s Puma II Project, MP27, produces over 330,000 tons of Eukaliner® in first year of operation

Product launched with machine’s startup and patented by Klabin is made 100% from eucalyptus and features superior sustainability attributes

São Paulo, September 5, 2022 - 365 days of operation marked by operational excellence. One year after the startup of the paper machine (MP) of Puma Project II (MP), which is Klabin’s largest investment ever and consists of the construction of two paper machines with integrated pulp production, MP27 has produced over 330,000 tons of Eukaliner® and Eukaliner White®. The products are marketed in the domestic and export markets and reinforce the company’s vocation for developing sustainable and innovative solutions in paper and paper packaging in Brazil. The machine, which has annual production capacity of 450,000 tons, exceeded its expected learning curve for the period.

Developed and patented by Klabin, the Eukaliner® product line produced by MP27 is the world’s first kraftliner paper made 100% from eucalyptus fiber, which means advantages such as optimizing the forest area required for production (lower volume of resources required for producing the same volume of paper), as well as properties such as a more robust structure, which allows for reducing the grammage of corrugated board packaging with higher strength and superior printing quality.

Since the start of production, Eukaliner® exceeded even the properties demonstrated in the laboratory during production tests. In this phase, the product was tested at over 15 clients that are opinion makers in the global market. Eukaliner® currently presents an edge crust test0} This result enables the production of more robust boxes while up to 20% lighter, which increases their competitiveness. “As a result, Eukaliner® outperformed expectations of clients in diverse countries across Europe (such as Belgium, Netherlands, Italy, United Kingdom, Iberia, Portugal and Spain, among others) and Latin America (Peru, Chile, Argentina, Ecuador and Mexico), besides converting our own corrugated board packaging units,” said Flávio Deganutti, director of Paper Business at Klabin.

The twelve months that Eukaliner® has been on the market were also marked by positive results at clients.  In Chile, the use of Eukaliner® in place of a product with similar characteristics reduced paper consumption by 20%. “This is an example of diverse gains obtained by clients, which range from the economic standpoint, considering the lower volume of paper needed, to sustainability attributes, since less product used results in less CO2 emissions for its production and transport.  Moreover, Eukaliner® uses 40% less planted area than products developed with other fibers,” said Francisco Razzolini, director of Industrial Technology, Innovation and Sustainability at Klabin.

Since it began to be produced, Eukaliner® has also strengthened Klabin's competitive edge, especially in foreign markets, with regular supplies to various clients, thanks to the product's differentials.  “Eukaliner®’s quality has captivated clients, consolidating Klabin’s leadership of the domestic market and driving its international expansion,” adds Deganutti.

Since its launch, Eukaliner® has already won several awards that attest to its features, such as the Destaques do Setor Awards from the Brazilian Pulp and Paper Technical Association (ABTCP), in the Packaging Paper Manufacturer category; the PPI Awards from Fastmarkets RISI, in the Packaging Innovation category and, more recently, the ECO Award from Amcham Brasil in the Sustainability Practices category  for large companies.

Puma II: project expansion continues and MP28 startup expected in 2023

The Puma II Project in Ortigueira, Paraná, in August 2022: MP28 installation works are proceeding according to schedule and the new paper machine is expected to go operational in the second quarter of 2023

Apart from MP27, which went operational in 2021, the Puma II Project continues installation work on MP28, the second paper machine planned in the project.

MP28 will produce paperboard, with production capacity of 460 thousand tons per year, and consolidates Klabin’s position as a global producer of cardboard for liquid foods (milk and juices) and processed foods (cereals, chocolates, pizzas, proteins, etc.), hygiene and cleaning products (powder detergents, toothpaste), cardboard for multipack packaging of cans and bottles, in addition to cardboards for the growing food service segment, such as cups and trays, continuing the Company’s plans for continuous growth and expansion.  The machine is slated for startup in the second quarter of 2023.

In all, the Puma II Project has received investments of R$12.9 billion from Klabin. It is the largest investment in the company’s history and the biggest private investment in Paraná, reinforcing the Company’s positive and long-standing partnership with the state, besides being part of the expansion cycle launched by the company.  The Project strengthens the integration of Klabin's production chain and was designed to become a global benchmark in sustainability, technology and innovation. Since the beginning, it has been aligned with the principles of Industry 4.0 to offer the market high quality products, thus generating value for the Company and for society.
